Kelley Hughes is a financial advisor and Certified Financial Divorce Analyst (CDFA®) whose mission is to support and advocate for women before, during and after divorce.
Kelley provides the financial analysis her clients need to negotiate and navigate their divorce. She answers questions like: What’s the projected retirement income from these investment accounts? As a CDFA, Kelley serves as a neutral financial third party for divorcing couples and as a trial consultant to divorce attorneys.
Her own divorce led her to this stage in her career. She didn’t have someone who had her entire financial picture in mind. There wasn’t anyone helping her think through each financial negotiation. Kelley also knows that financial planning doesn’t end when the divorce is finalized. Post-divorce she provides financial planning for cash flow and debt management, home purchase, retirement and college savings.
Kelley grew up in Stafford, Virginia, in a family in which the men were entrepreneurs and the women were teachers. And now she is doing both as she builds a financial advisory practice focused on educating and empowering female clients.
Kelley’s financial career follows years of caring for her three children and running her household. After her second child was born – her son had a life-threatening birth defect – Kelley knew her No. 1 job was his care. She navigated the health insurance system to pay off $90K in medical bills, as well as to cover medical and therapy copays equal to a mortgage payment on one income. While caring for her children and running her household, Kelley also volunteered for her church and kids’ school – roles that involved heavy financial responsibilities.
Kelley earned her bachelor’s degree in marketing and human resource management from University of Virginia. After graduation, she accepted a position as assistant buyer for Hecht’s department stores because it sounded most entrepreneurial. Her exceptionally high math scores – the highest the company had ever seen, she was told – landed her in the men’s clothing department, the most profitable division.
Kelley lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, with her husband, Peter, three children and two bonus children. In her free time, she loves being outside – hiking, camping, gardening and eating dinner on her back deck. She’s also writing her first book – a workbook with the working title “Landing on Your Feet” to help people through the financial aspects of getting divorced.
